Objective: The Alchemist Review, the student-run literary journal here at UIS, is expanding to a regional undergraduate literary journal, and with that shift, we are hoping to make use of a more sophisticated online system to accept submissions from writers. One that is free to use is called Submission Manager, but it looks like it requires Web Server space, and we were hoping ITS could help us house the application and get it up and running. The system requirements listed on Submission Manager's site are: • Web Server • PHP (version 5 or higher) • mySQL (version 5 or higher) • SMTP application (if you want the system to send email notifications) • Web Browser (set to accept cookies) Here's a link with more detailed information on installing Submission Manager: https://www.submissionmanager.net/documentation.html#installation_header Note: Our time frame for this project does have flexibility. I’m unaware what the general time frame is for this type of IT work.
Justification: This new submission system will help foster AR’s expansion to a regional undergraduate literary journal—expanding the reach of the journal/organization, UIS’s student-writers and artists, and the university as a whole. A new submission manager will make it easier for writers to submit their work to AR, as well as easier for editors to manage, track, and respond to the submissions they receive. Overall, it will make for a more efficient and stream-lined editorial process. Also, since student-editors join The Alchemist Review staff to receive hands-on editorial and publishing experience, it’s important that they receive experience using software and processes common in the publishing field.
